I'm a disability educator, coach, and mentor and your co-pilot on the journey to reclaim your life after paralysis. With nearly three decades as a wheelchair user under my belt I’ve realized that most rehabilitation programs, resources and supports for newly injured people fall short of teaching individuals how to thrive. I created Empowered Para to change that. With a dose of TMI, a dash of humor and a whole lotta love I will help you:

Your wheelchair cushion is more than just a comfy seat. If you want to have less pain, good skin, and a straight back then you need to choose your cushion wisely (and probably with the help of an occupational therapist that is knowledgeable about your disability).

My current cushion is a GeoMatrix Hybrid by @blakemedicaldistribution and it ticks all the right boxes for me. If you want to see if one of their cushions is right for you head to the link in my bio!

This picture was taken 4 years ago. It was the very first time I ever tried handcycling.

At the time, I had been in a wheelchair for 19 years, and in all those years, I had never attempted cycling.

Why?

Because I was afraid of the transfer from my wheelchair to the cycle and back again.

I had never transferred that far before, and I was afraid that I would not be strong enough to get myself back in my wheelchair from the seat of the handcycle.

I was terrified of embarrassing myself, or worse, proving to myself that I was incapable.

The 2 foot distance between my wheelchair and the handcycle may as well have been Mt. Everest to me.

When I finally got the nerve to try it, I realized that not only was the transfer doable, but that, with enough practice, it was actually easy.

For 19 years I watched my friends and family go cycling without me. I said goodbye to them as they rode away and missed out on all those opportunities to make memories all because of a measly 24 inches.

I realize now that the obstacle was not the distance I needed to transfer, but my limiting belief that I couldn't do it. It was in my head all along.

I could tell you countless more stories about things I missed out on because I was simply too afraid to try.

I can't do anything about the past, but I can choose what kind of future I create. I know that future will still hold a lot of fear, but now, and for every moment I still have left on this earth, I'll feel the fear and I'll do it anyway.

On this day, 23 years ago, I was a 13 year old girl without a care in the world.

The year was 1999 and I was obsessed with boys, thought Dawson's Creek was the greatest show ever, and I loved sports. I couldn't wait to turn 14 in January and was pumped for all the Y2K New Years Eve parties that my friends were planning.

I had no idea on the morning of December 2 that instead of ringing in the new year with my friends, I would spend Y2K AND my 14th birthday in the hospital and Blake, my friend from school, would not live to see another day.

That night Blake and I went snowmobiling with some friends and didn't make it home. One fateful decision to go snowmobiling ended a life, changed a life, and affected so many others.

The anniversary of my accident is always a special day for me but THIS anniversary is significant because my son Jacob is 14 and in grade nine, the same age that Blake was when he died.

I am struck with the realization that I am now old enough to have a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD!

23 years that Blake didn't get. 23 years that his family didn't have him for. Christmas', birthdays, good days, bad days, ALL days. Some mundane, some special, but all of them without him.

Every year, as my son has neared the age Blake was when he died, I have tried to imagine the hurt that ripped through Blake's mom as she realized that she lost her son. Just imagining it is heartbreaking. I know that I can never really know how it feels and I pray to God I never find out.

Today, I am bottling up all the big feelings I have and packaging them up into a big gift called THE PRESENT and expressing gratitude for every moment. Big or small, good or bad; every moment is special.

Miracles are all around us and it just takes a shift in perspective to see them.

If you've ever thought "if _____________ happened to me, I wouldn't want to live anymore" then take a minute to stop and think about how that belief affects the people actually living that existence.

My life isn't sad and I certainly don't think about eating a pistol. In fact it's quite the opposite. I am grateful for everyday, every challenge, and every opportunity to empower people with disabilities who are living under the pressure of a society that tells them life with a disability isn't worth living.

Suicide touches all classes of people from all walks of life and isn't reserved for those with challenges, hardships, or disabilities.

Let's do better and stop perpetuating these perceptions.

I'm not famous, I don't make tons of money, but I get to help people like me and that's pretty cool.

Had a fun day celebrating a double digit birthday with my two favorite people!

Chronic pain?

Drugs are useful sometimes but I certainly don't want to be on pain meds everyday. I'm already on enough drugs.

So for pain I try to use cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to lessen my perception of the pain. By changing my experience of and reaction to the pain it actually makes the pain less.

Dr. Joe Dispenza says that when we focus on our pain thr brain centers responsible for sensing pain actually increase in size, making you more sensitive to pain. I want to do the opposite. I want to shrink those brain centers by actively changing how I perceive pain.

It takes time and effort but it's worth it. Changing what you say about the pain, getting on with life despite the pain, and having gratitude for your miraculous body EVEN THOUGH it is in pain are all important steps in your journey to feel better.

Dayle continues to show me and everyone around her that attitude is everything in life.

Dayle is always positive, grateful, funny, ambitious, and kind. She doesn't let her disability define her potential and never uses it as an excuse.

She sees everything in her life as a blessing and I am so proud to get to learn from such an amazing human.

Yesterday my daughter said that she wished I could do everything she could do.

I wish that too baby girl.

But since I can't I may as well be grateful that I get to watch the ones I love do the things I wish I could.

I'll take that view any day.

When you have a spinal cord injury there are stages that you have to go through to get back to a life that feels somewhat normal.

Each stage has milestones and these milestones, though simple, are so meaningful and worth celebrating.

Whatever stage you're in and whatever milestone you're working on, you're doing a great job.

Go ahead. Have a "I can wipe my own ass" party when you're done lol.

And don't by a martyr. You're not doing anyone a favor by staying home. No one is going to thank you for being so considerate.

All You're doing is missing out on valuable memories and robbing your friends of the opportunity to learn what you need and how to accommodate you.

Go.
